Starting Kindergarten

At Cardiff Public School, our Kindergarten Transition program offers a variety of engaging activities designed to support children and their families as they begin their educational journey. Starting school is a big milestone, and our program helps children become comfortable in their new surroundings, meet teachers and peers, while providing parents with opportunities to connect with our welcoming school community.

Throughout the year, families are invited to participate in a range of special events, including a school tour with the principal, a Kindergarten Expo, Playgroup sessions, Orientation sessions, and our much-loved Teddy Bears Picnic. These activities help children familiarise themselves with our school, make new friends, and prepare for a confident start to Kindergarten.

Families will receive regular updates about upcoming transition events and opportunities to connect and learn more about Cardiff Public School. We believe in building strong partnerships with families and work collaboratively to support each child’s unique needs, ensuring a happy and successful beginning to school.

Please contact the school via email to express your interest and keep up to date with our Kindergarten Transition Program, or fill in the online enrolment form. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — we look forward to welcoming you to Cardiff Public School.

What to expect in Kindergarten

Learning and development

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.

Daily routines

Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.

Best Start Assessment

At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
